Site Download

Hi,

We may eventually look at bringing our website in-house, and therefore an issue we have is that our current website was created by an external agency, and we manage/update it via a Content Management System. My question revolves around whether, using Dreamweaver, I will be able to download this site/files etc. or whether the fact that we do use a CMS restricts the compatibility of our site with DW?

I ask this as if we plan to bring the website in-house I presume that I would lose the CMS functionality once I upload the site using DW? Also, if using DW to bring the site in-house is possible would I lose functionality that is not available via DW (such as the 'search site' function?).

Finally, I presume I would need some kind of access username/password in order to download/upload such a site - how would I obtain these?

Thanks for the help - please let me know if you require any further information before being able to give a satisfactory answer.

Thanks

Nick

RE: Site Download

Nicholas,

This is probably best discussed with you external agency. If you own the CMS you will be able to continue to use the CMS, however you will have problems creating the pages in Dreamweaver as all the pages will be database driven.

If you do not own the CMS then you will lose this functionality.

You web host will be able to provide you will the user-name and password for uploading web pages.

If you need any further help with this we would be able to provide you with consultancy.

Hope this helps
David

RE: Site Download

David,

Thanks for the prompt response.

I do not think we own the CMS so I think we would lose this functionality. This would not be a problem so long as I could continue to edit the site via dreamweaver.

Just to be clear though, would we lose features such as the search tool mentioned above that are not compatible with DW?

Thanks

Nick

RE: Site Download

Nicholas,

You can use Dreamweaver for many things including writing code in languages such as PHP, JSP or ASP. It is most likely that the search tool for your website is written in one of these languages. If the code is written for your site, and is within your web site files then you will keep the search feature.

You will be able to edit the site in Dreamweaver, but please remember that your CMS will have created pages from a database, so you may lose a lot of web pages if you no longer use the CMS (as they will be no application to generate all of the pages from the database).

Hope this helps
David

Dreamweaver tip:

JumpMenu in new window

When inserting a jumpmenu to a page, the only option available for 'open in' is usually 'main window'. There would be other options available if the page was a frameset.

To change the jumpmenu to open in a new window, change the target parameter of the selectbox in your code to 'window.open()'.

eg.
<select name="menu1" onChange="MM_jumpMenu('window.open()',this,0)">
