HI , In our training we were informed that if we didn't set our projects to have a Zero task this would affect the calculations . We're just wondering what calculations they will affect .

Many Thanks

Hi Alison

Thank you for your question

I am assuming that by zero task you are referring to a milestone. I also assume that you are talking about the need for a final milestone, to which all tasks without natural successor tasks should be linked.

This is necessary to ensure scheduling continuity, whereby the final completion point of a project can easily be identified. Any task that is not linked to the final milestone “hangs” in the schedule. This means that you can have several tasks that might potentially become the final task in the project, should one of the tasks be delayed or have its durations extended. As a consequence it is difficult to keep track of the project end point, and things can change without it being obvious.

If however, everything is linked to a final milestone, then this milestone is the easily identifiable end point of the project.

Hope this is useful

Regards

Stephen
