I was wondering about how to capture student data via forms. Possibly with the info going to an Access Database without need for Server side scripting

Writing to database without using server side scripting

by - trainer Rich platinum contributer[744 posts] (2007 Jan 30 Tue, 13:22) Edited on 2007 Jan 30 Tue, 13:25 replyReply

Hi there Iyabode,

I've never heard of a case in which server side scripting is avoided while capturing form information to a database.

In my opinion, server side scripting is required for any database entry not only at technical level, but also at a security level.

This page might give you some insight as to how CGI works.
http://www.wdvl.com/Authoring/Scripting/WebWare/Server/
As you can see in the diagrams, two layers of Web Server Software (IIS, Apache etc.) and CGI scripts sit between the web site and a database.

Might I also suggest checking out http://www.bravenet.com as they may be able to assist you with pre-written scripts and services, usually free.

Otherwise, I'd recommend hiring a developer or learning some server side scripting languages such as ASP or PHP.

Oh, and you may like to look into the possibility of sending the form data to an e-mail address, and when Outlook (or similar) receives the e-mail, it is automatically inserted into the database.

Good luck, and thank you for your question.

Regards, Rich
