Protect Workbook

Dear Trainer,

I would like to protect grouped sheets in a workbook with the exception of some cells.

As the worksheets are grouped, I cannot select "protect worksheet" but only "protect workbook."

When I select "protect workbook," I am given the choice of ticking boxes for "structure" and "windows."

Can you explain what those options mean?

Each worksheet is set up to look the same, and as there are many worksheets, I want to make my changes to the group rather than each worksheet.

Thank you very much for your help!

Vicky

RE: Protect Workbook

Hi Victoria, Thanks for the post, well here comes the rub, sadly you cannot as I am sure you have found out protect worksheets if they are grouped, this sounds crazy but its true, so to protect your worksheet cells you will have to un group them and apply the protection on each sheet. However the good bit is that you can select those cells you wish to remain open whilst the sheets are grouped, its only the Tool>Protection Protect Sheet part of the operation which has to be undertaken on an individual worksheet basis.
When you protect the Workbook the two options Structure and Windows apply; locking the structure of a workbook, prevents users from adding or deleting worksheets or from displaying hidden worksheets. The Windows option prevents users from changing the size or position of worksheet windows.
As you have discovered Workbook structure and window protection applies to the entire workbook.
I hope that answers your question, if it has please click the Resolved link, best regards Pete
