Hi Alisa

Thank you for your question; and welcome to the forum.

A couple of things you may find useful:

- Formulas always start with an equals sign =

- You can get a total for a row or column of numbers by clicking in the next available blank cell in the row or column; and using Alt + = to enter the Sum function. You will need to check that Excel has selected all the cells you wish to add together; if not you can use your mouse to select the cells that contain the values to be added.

- There is a key located to the left of the 1 key and below the Esc key on your keyboard which is called the pipe key - it has three different symbols on it. If you hold down the Ctrl key and press the pipe key at the same time, you will be able to see where all the formulas are in a spreadsheet. Use the same two keys to change your spreadsheet view back to normal.

I hope you find these useful.
Amanda

Excel tip:

Formula for last day of month

In some cases it is necessary to find the last day of a month for a given date. If you use the following formula, you can achieve this, ie; if you have a column of dates, use this formula to find the end of month for each day by using the fill handle. The formula is as follows, and assumes in this example that the first date in question is in cell C5, in any other cell type; =DATE(YEAR(C5),MONTH(C5)+1,1)-1
