MS Project - Linking tasks

by - trainer Thia [6 posts] (2008 May 22 Thu, 22:38) replyReply

Hello Donna

Thanks for posting your question. Let's do a simple example to illustrate linking tasks. Imagine you have entered all the tasks into the project plan and are now ready to link them. When you link tasks, you create relationships between them. Here's part of the plan:

Task id 3 Do research
Task id 4 Type up results
Task id 5 Book appointments

As soon as the research is complete, we can type up the results i.e. when task 3 is finished we can start task 4. Simply select task 3 row first and drag down over task 4 row then click the Link Tasks icon (chain link) in the standard toolbar. This creates a Finish to Start relationship between tasks 3 and 4 and shows the link in the project plan.

When tasks are not next to each other, just do a Ctrl click to select them. If we want to show that task 5 can start as soon as task 3 is finished, select the row for task 3, hold the CTRL key down and select task 5. Now click the Link Task icon and it's done. This creates a Finish to Start relationship between tasks 3 and 5.

There are other ways of linking tasks but I think this techique is the easiest.

I hope this answers your question, Donna. If it has, please mark the question as resolved. Thanks.

Regards
Thia
