Why are the values sometimes not recognised when you look up a value from another spreadsheet?

The answer to your question depends on how you are applying the Vlookup. If you try to copy and paste the answer of one Lookup function from one cell to another from one workbook to another please remember that the absolute referencing (the dollar signs within cells) is applied by default so sometimes it is important to remove the dollar signs to make the cells relative. This is specially relevant when you decide to copy and paste the Vlookup function to other cells.
