Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.
When you filter data in a spreadsheet you can only see the data on a row-by-row basis, and you are not necessarily given any useful information from an analytical perspective if the rows contain some figures.
Constructing a pivot table allows you to view the same data in a 3D format, and analyse any figures in various ways.
We do cover pivot tables as part of our Excel Advanced course, also there are good resources on the Microsoft web site and on www.contextures.com relating to pivot tables if you are interested in learning more.
