I would like to know in which way I can use Block names, why it is useful and in which way I can also use the same names as part of a formula.

Thank you for your question.

Block names is used to give a name to a range or group of cells.

Once a range has been named, you can use the name to navigate to the cells, or use the name in a formula to refer to the cells in the range.

To give a name to a range of cells:
1. Select (highlight) the cells.
2. Click in the Name box (to the left of the formula bar), and enter a name for the range - the name cannot contain spaces (e.g. Jan_Sales). Then press Enter to apply the name.


If you click away from the cells you have selected and use the dropdown arrow at the right hand side of the name box, you can select the name you just entered, and Excel will automatically select the cells in the range - so you can use the name to navigate.

If you create a formula which refers to the cells in the named range you have created, you can use the name to refer to these cells instead of the cell references, e.g. =SUM(Jan_Sales) instead of something like =SUM(B5:B50)

Hide data in Excel Worksheets

Let's say you have some data in cell 'C5' you would like to hide from the casual viewer.

Click cell 'C5' to select it.

Click the 'Format' menu, select 'Cells'. When the 'Format Cells' dialogue box opens, click the 'Numbers' tab (if necessary), then select 'Custom' from the 'Category' list.

Double-click the 'Type' entry box and type three semi-colons: ";;;"

Click 'OK' to close the dialogue box and accept the new formatting.

The data in cell 'C5' disappears. It's still there and will work in calculations, but it isn't visible.

If you need to check the data, just click the blank cell and the contents appear in the 'Formula bar'.
