Number of Work Days v Duration Days

I am using an MS Project file created by someone else, and am checking through the manday's calculated.

The number Work days is 24.5 whilst the number of Duration Days is 9.5.

I can reconcile the Duration days against the actual task - they are the same.

But individual tasks add up to 15. So why does it make it 24.5?

Please help!!

RE: Number of Work Days v Duration Days

Hi Sarah

thanks for your question. First just to check what are the columns you are tracking and where are you seeing the totals?

It sounds like you are in the Gantt view and have added the work column to your table. If you have turned on the Project Summary task you will see rolled up values in this row for the Duration and Work columns.

Duration shows the working day duration for the task/summary/project. Work shows the work to be carried out in that duration. It is generally calculated when resources are added to a task. That means that a one day task (Duration 1) with 2 people working full time on it would have 16 hours of work (8 hours for each resource)

I hope this helps you track down where the numbers are coming from - if you have any more questions please do let us know.

Kind regards,
Andrew

Ms project tip:

Set default task type - Project 2010

a. In Project, click on the File tab
b. Select Options from left hand side
c. Click on Schedule to set the scheduling options
d. Set the Default Task type box to your chosen option
i. Generally if you plan/estimate your projects using durations you should use fixed duration, and untick the box New tasks are effort driven, if you plan/estimate with person hours use fixed work, or for plans estimated with the proportion of resources time use fixed units, and untick the box New tasks are effort driven)
e. Click OK to apply your changes
