How do I get brackets to align when I am working in a table with both positive and negative text. I have explained this to Simon (my trainer for today) - so hopefully he will be able to explain my queory in more detail.

Hi Helen

Thanks for your question and welcome to the forum.

Am I correct in assuming that the negative figures contain extra characters, e.g. a negative amount would be displayed as (432) or -432 and you want any positive amounts to line up so that the last digits in each number line up with each other? How are your negative numbers displayed?

Also are you importing the data in from an Excel spreadsheet, or working with the data directly in Word?

We display our figures as (123123) and 12341234 and I need the numbers to line up not the brackets. It use to be a case of selecting 'align brackets' but I'm not sure how to find it now.

I am just working with the data directly in Word.

Was the 'align brackets' that you refer to available in the version of Word you used to use before 2007? If so where did it used to be located in the version of Word you used to use?

It was just in the pull down list where you change the header styles in a large document.

Hi Helen

I'm not sure that this is a standard style that comes with Word by default...maybe someone at your office created the style themselves? I will have a look into this a bit further and see if I can come up with a solution.

OK, I'm glad that is what you are after.

First you need to insert the table as an Excel spreadsheet rather than creating a normal table in Word.

To do this: Insert ribbon, click the dropdown arrow associated with the Object button, select Object, New and Excel Worksheet. Click OK.

You will now have a blank table that is in fact an Excel worksheet.

Select the column that you are going to put the figures in (e.g. if the figures are going in column B, click on the letter B at the top of the column.

Go to Home ribbon, and inside the group of Number buttons click the small arrow in the bottom right corner. This gets you into the Format Cells dialogue box.

On the Number tab, select Custom from the left hand side.

The word General will appear in the box under the word Type.

Select and delete the word General.

Type in the following: # ;(#)

Note there is a blank space between the first # and the ;
This is what makes the figures line up with each other.

Click OK.

Test by typing some figures into the column.

How do you display two tables adjacent to each other on a page that has two columns?

1. Insert two tables as you normally would.

2. Adjust column widths in each table so that the total width of each table is less than half the width of the page.

3. Highlight both tables.

4. Click the Columns button (on the Standard toolbar), then select 2 Columns.
