RE: Connecting headings in document to Table of Contents

Hi Julia, good to hear from you again. You need to do two things to achieve this. First, make sure your headings throughout the document are formatted with the same style, for example the Heading 1 style. Your TOC will not work without this.

Secondly, insert the table of contents but in the TOC dialog box click the Options button. A dialog box will appear indicating which styles you want to use for your TOC. Make sure in this list, Heading 1 style is set to "1" and the other styles are not numbered. The idea is to simply indicate what styles and the consequent levels within the TOC you want. Click on OK and look at the preview pane, you should get an indication of the basic structure of the TOC. Click OK and it should go into your document.

Two pieces of advice. Work on a simple document first to get the process right, then apply it to a more complicated one. Secondly, if your TOC has "Bookmark not defined" in it you haven't applied your styles correctly in the document, so go back and reapply them.
