Milestones

I need to show a milestone at the start of a day rather than the end of the previous day while still using a soon as possible link.

An example is, there is a preconstruction phase to a building which finishes on a friday afternoon at 17:00. i need the start on site milestone to say start on site monday morning 8:00am. This is not a fixed date because if the preconstruction period can be shorted the start on site date can be brought forward. however I cannot show the start on site date being the friday afternoon at 17:00 as this is not when works will start on site.

i also cannot show the start on site date as a full day as this means all work starts on tuesday not monday.

It is a requirement of the client that I show a start on site milestone that accurately reflects the start on site date.

Any advice would be helpful

RE: milestones

Hi Damian

Thank you for your question.

The milestone has no duration which is making it appear on Friday rather than on Monday. Try setting the duration of the milestone to 1 minute (1m) which turns it into a short blue bar. Then on the advanced tab for the milestone tick the Show as Milestone box. Now there is a duration so it will be forced to the next working day (Monday) but can move earlier in the schedule if the pre phase is shorter than planned.

Although this is a bit of a compromise does it help present things more clearly on the plan?

Kind regards,

Andrew

RE: milestones

Does this mean i would have to reduce the next task by a minute to make sure it shows a completion of the right time or is a minute to small a time period for this to matter. Sounds like this may work though.

Regards

Damian

RE: milestones

Hi Damian

Thank you for coming back to me.

Unfortunately as this is a workaround there isn't an easy answer. In the end we are looking to find a way of making the chart look right. The milestone appearing at the end of Friday is just the way the software handles a zero duration task before non working time. Giving it a duration of 1 minute is enough to push it forwards but you will have a minute too much on Monday. Either way there is a compromise. In practice the milestone is often left with zero duration and although it appears to fall on Friday this is not a major problem as it will likely move again as the plan is updated.

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,
Andrew
