TASK WITH DURATION OF 1 MONTH, BUT CAN BE DONE WITHIN ONE YEAR

When we produce programmes for major Clients they appreciate a graphic indication of tasks which they must complete, such as interior decorations - colours, materials, products and the like and the time period they have to ponder and deliberate. The actual time it might take is one month but can be done any time within a one year period. The only critical date is the end one. Normally we show a dashed task bar with the duration of the task shown in solid somewhere along the line. How can I indicate this graphically on the Gantt chart?

Also, if Anthony Malone is not reading this, can you please tell him that upon arriving home last night my Partner asked if I could practice my new skills by producing a programme for her INCLUDING RESOURCES so that she could submit a bid based upon her estimated costs. Oh, the irony!!!

RE: TASK WITH DURATION OF 1 MONTH, BUT CAN BE DONE WITHIN ONE YE

Hi Gregory

Thanks for your question.

One way to display a task and indicate how long someone has before it should be completed is to add a deadline date to the activity. To do this create the task as normal then double click on its name and select the Advanced tab.

In the deadline box set the very last date that this activity should be completed. When you click OK project puts an arrow over the date you set. This is generally some way away from the task's current finish. As well as acting as a marker the deadline will also create an alert (a red diamond in the indicators column) if the end of the task ever crosses the deadline marker.

Another approach might be to use a drawing (View > Toolbars > Drawing) such as a dashed line or box to indicate the potential span of time the task could occupy.

I hope this helps, do let us know if you have any further questions and I'll make sure I pass on your message to Anthony.

Kind regards,
Andrew

Ms project tip:

Giving Someone a Gantt Chart Snapshot

To pass on a picture of a Gantt chart segment, choose the appropriate view, select the rows to be included, then click on the camera icon and select For Screen. The graphics image can be pasted into another document. (See Paste icon forn Project 2010)
