In the field with auto numbers can you have an alpha character before the number?

For upcoming training course dates see: Pricing & availability

RE: Access

Hi Julie,

Thank you for your question.

In the properties box of the autonumber field, click into format and type something like this:

P0

P0 - this means it will put a P in front of every record and then the unique number.

I hope this answers your question.

Regards

Simon

RE: Access 2003

Hi Julie,

Thank you for your response.

Did you type a P followed by a zero in the Format property of the autonumber field?

I tested it yesterday with an autonumber field and it worked.

Please find attached a small database with the format line included.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Simon

RE: Access 2003

Thank you that worked. I have another question can you get auto numbers to start at 001?

RE: Access 2003

Hi Julie,

Thank you for your response.

In the format property add two more zeros:

e.g. P000

Each 0 represents the number of characters you need.

That should do the trick.

I hope this answers your question.

Regards

Simon

Access tip:

Copy a Previous Record's Values to a New Record

If you often enter the same value in one field of a table, there are two methods to save re-typing the data.

1. Use Ctrl+' (apostrophe) to repeat the value input in the previous record.

2. Change the field's DefaultValue property in Design View to the most commonly used value.
