References to other workbooks

Hi

I am trying to reduce the clunkiness of my workbooks by referring to data in an original workbook when constructing formulas (functions in fact) in a new workbook. But if I start a formula in the new workbook i.e. =if(then click on the relevant cell in the original workbook), it will not click on it.
Do I have to write it in in longhand or is there a way if being able to just click on the cell in the original workbook?
Thx

RE: references to other workbooks

Hi mark

Thank you for your question

This problem arises when you have the two files in different instances of Excel, i.e. you have the xcel application open twice. If you open both files in the same instnce of excel you should have no problems. Simply open the first file, ad from within that workbook opn the second

Hope this helps

Regards

Stephen

Excel tip:

Turn Function tooltips on and off

Excel 2002 (XP) and Excel 2003 have the Function tooltips facility. When you type in a function name followed by a bracket, for example, =IF(, a yellow box appears beside the function name and lists the function's arguments. This is very useful when you can't quite remember the order of a function's arguments or what the arguments actually are!

However, Function tooltips can become annoying. To turn them off, choose Tools|Options. and select the General tab. Then, untick the Function tooltips box and choose OK.
