I received a Word 2010 file that must be saved in compatibility mode as many of our clients are still using 2003 but when I do so, the formatting is thrown off. I also tried converting the file to a pdf but experienced similar issues. Any suggestions on how to correct the issue?

Thank you for your patience & apologies once again for the delay.
The best way to deal with compatibilty issues between Word 2010 and Word 2003 is to save the file you're formatting in the 97-2003 format (through the save as menu). When you re-open it in Word 2010 you'll see Compatibility Mode written in the title bar of the document window indicating that Compatibility Mode is turned on.
With Compatibility Mode turned on, you can open, edit, and save Word 97-2003 documents using Word 2010 but none of the new or enhanced features of Word 2010 will be available.
So essentially you have two choices:
1. Work in Compatibility Mode and not utilise any Office 2010 new features.
2. Convert your document to the Word 2010 file format and have access to the new and enhanced features in Word 2010
