Hi Kevin
Thank you for your question. The grey ghost like tasks are called External Tasks and indicate a predecessor or successor in a separate project file.
To create them you need to link two projects together. One way of doing this is to:
Create a temporary project file
from the insert menu choose insert > Project then pick one of the plans to link
In the next row on the temporary project insert the second plan to link.
Next open both project summary tasks so you can see the subtasks in both projects.
Finally select the predecessor in one of the inserted plans and the successor in the other plan and link them.
Now close the temporary file - Project will ask if you would like to save changes. Save the changes to the inserted projects. You don't need to save the temporary plan.
The two project plans are now linked. If you open either of them you will find they each contain a grey task connecting to the other plan.
