How do I create a page number for each tab in a workbook i.e. tab 1 is Page 1 of 6, tab 2 is Page 2 of 6, tab 3 is page 3 of 6 e.t.c.

right click on the tab name and rename manually, there is no automatic way of renaming sheets in the manner you wish.

I don't want to re-name a tab, I want to have page numbers in the sheets. i.e. I have a workbook which contains 6 tabs. When I print the work book there are 6 pages (1 page in each tab). When I print I want sequential page numbers to appear on the sheets.

Try header/footer elements?
I think you'd be better off adding header/footer to your page setup, John.
For each of your 6 sheets, go to File -> Page setup -> Header/Footer tab -> Custom header button.
In the dialogue box that appears, you can see buttons to insert elements such as page number, total number of pages and even the tab name.
You'll need to do this for all your tabs, and be sure to preview (File -> Print -> select entire workbook -> Preview) to ensure it's the result you want.
