You can do this using the standard grouping tool. to stop the canvas appearing, simply go to TOOLS > OPTIONS> GENERAL, then at the bottom of that screen, there is an option to create AutoShapes without using a canvas.

How to Format Text in Word 2010

To format text in Word 2010, first, select the text to be formatted, go to the Home tab where you will see groups such as Font, Paragraph or Styles.
