Converting dates

I have a range of dates that I have exported into Excel from another system. I need to compare these dates with another to get a period of time.

However, Excel is reading the exported dates as text, not as dates. I have tried doing Format - Cells etc. which has no effect. Can anyone think of a way to convert these to dates or even just to numbers?

Thanks

Tristan

Excel tip:

Status Bar Functions

When using the SUM, MIN, MAX, AVERAGE and COUNT functions, the result of such calculations are displayed in the worksheet.

However, if a range of cells, containing numbers, is highlighted, and then a right-mouse click is performed at the bottom right side of the status bar, then the result of those functions will be displayed.
