Data entry

I enter alot of repeated data. Sometimes, excel see's the first few letters I type and enters what it thinks I am going to type, and it's great because excel is usually correct. Sometimes, excel does not do this and I would like to know why this is so I can make it happen all the time. Thanks

RE: data entry

Hi James

Thanks for your question.

There could be two reasons for your observation that spring to mind.

One is that after you have entered a few items into a column, it may be that there are two words that share the (for example) four same letters at the beginning, so Excel won't bring the rest of the word up for your straight away as it has yet to figure out which word you want to put in.

The other option is that the AutoComplete feature has been turned off. You can check this by going to Tools - Options - Edit and seeing if 'Enable AutoComplete for cell values' is checked.

Excel tip:

Use Paint Brush to Format More than one Cell

To copy a format to many cells or ranges

1. Select the cell with the format that you want to copy

2. Double-click on the paint brush

When you move to the cell where you want to paste the format you will notice that a paint brush follows the cursor.

Paste the format to all the cells or ranges you need to format.

When finished go back to the paint brush on the tool bar and single click on it to deactivate the function.
