Hi

In my photo website I am displaying my pictures on each page in the form of a one row, multiple column table, so to see all the pics you scroll across like a film strip.

This is working for the pics i've had up for a while, but upon trying to update the pictures with new ones only the 'Alt' tag comes up with no image.

Each picture is in the respective file for it's category, all of which are under the same root folder.

If you go to the link you'll get what i mean. http://www.therollingimage.com

Is this something i'm doing wrong or is it a server issue? It should be straight forward to me?

thanks

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Great photos!

I can only imagine it must be that the files are not in the place your html file is pointing to.

A bit of trial and error should do the trick...

First, type into your browser the exact URL of an image that isn't displaying on your web page.
eg. http://www.therollingimage.com/Travel/TR13.jpg

The picture should appear in the browser, no problem. If it doesn't, you haven't uploaded the images properly. (Check FTP settings or you aren't uploading to the incorrect folder)

Secondly, right click on your 'alt tag' place-holder where the picture should appear, and choose Properties from the context menu. This will tell you where the browser is looking for the file. This should be EXACTLY the same as the URL entered in the first step. Check for uppercase and lowercase letters etc. If it is exactly the same, copy and paste it into a new browser window.

That's the basics. If it still appears to be all correct, but still isn't showing your images at the this stage, please reply and I'll think deeper about it.

Regards, Rich

I looked in the properties on the alt tag and found that the file name was coming out wrong i.e "http://www.therollingimage.com/www.therollingimage.com/Deralicte/DeGR01.jpg" instead of "http://www.therollingimage.com/Deralicte/DeGR01.jpg".

When I insert the picture in to the table the file name appears in 'Src' box in the properties section, but each time i do this it is prefixed with "/www.therollingimage.com" even though this appears nowhere in the file name when in its folder.

I originaly remedied this by simply deleting the prefix in th Src box and it worked, but upon trying to insert a new front page pic today even this is not working and the grey backgroun with the broken picture appears.

Have you any idea why this pre-fix might be being inserted? It didn't happen in the early stages of my website design

Thanks for your help.

Duncan

Hmm,

So it seems Dreamweaver is assuming it knows where your site and/or image folder is.

What about in your site properties...

Check Advanced -> Local info and see 'Http address' field - is this set? Sometimes this can be set automatically during editing of site properties, and uses what it thinks is your default remote directory. I always have this blank or just 'http://'
They use it to check your links are working properly, but I'm not sure this always works.

Also check 'default image directory' just above that one - if something is set there, blank it and save site properties, then restart dreamweaver and try inserting an image agagin.

If neither of the above work, get back to me and I'll have another think.

Regards, Rich

Dreamweaver tip:

Xhtml vs html

When using dreamwear template or just creating a blank webpage, you are able to select the markup language you want to use. The main choices are either xhtml or html. It is now best to select xhtml as this will translate all the html into xml, so it is transmitted across the web in xml format. One of the main advantages of this is that it makes the site that you build much more compatible with the range of different web browsers that exist.
