Hi Gavin,
Creating your own would take a while, and require programming knowledge. There are heaps of free chat room 'add-ons' for web sites. One of them is http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/chat/ which is easy to set up and usually hosted on Bravenet.
There are lots of other free tools from Bravenet too.
