Experience! Hi Anastasia,
it's all about practising and knowing what the desired outcome is.
if you want to add up a list of numbers in column A, you would use the sum function, like this:
=sum(A1:A500)
have a look thru all the functions by pressing the little Fx button next to the formula bar at the top of your spreadsheet.

Hi
The best thing to do is spend as much time as possible trying out different functions. The more you practice and gain experience the easier it will become.
Also if you are going into finance, you will be spending most of your time on Excel..
Or if that fails, you can always travel again..
