Hi sarah,
If you type in the formula =today() this will return the current system date. This will automatically update on a daily basis. So today it would say 21st November. If I went back to it tomorrow the it would say 22nd of November etc.
If you wanted to insert today's date and then have that remain the same, perhaps as some sort of time stamp then you would need to first copy the cell with the formula in it. You could then select the same cell and click on edit-Paste special and choose the value option. This would replace the formula with the actual date and this wouldn't subsequently change.
