Yes to change the Table of Contents style, this is not easy to find in Word. However the instructions below will give you the answer.

Whilst in the document that you wish to change the Table of Contents for, select Format menu, Styles and Formatting.

The Task Pane should now be opened up on the right of your screen.

Look towards the bottom and select the drop-down arrow in Show to choose Custom.

Scroll down the Format Settings dialog box which has now displayed on your screen and look for TOC 1 through to TOC 9.

If you have up to three levels in your Table of Contents, click to select TOC 1, TOC 2 and TOC 3

Click OK

These three styles will now be available for modifying from the list.

Right click on the style name e.g. TOC 1 in the Task Pane to made changes.

Click OK to save your changes which will now reflect in your table of contents.

For more information Table of Contents is covered on our Word Advanced course.

Word tip:

Autonumbering in Word

The Auto Numbering feature in Word can be both useful (when you want it to work) and annoying when you don't.

When you begin a list by typing 1 then press the space bar or tab key, and type in text, Word will automatically change the paragraph to a numbered list when the ENTER key is pressed. This will mean that the next paragraph is automatically numbered as 2.

If you do not want Word to continue sequentially numbering any following paragraphs, you can turn off Auto Numbering. To do this, go to Tools-Auto Correct Options. In the Auto Correct dialog box, click the "Auto Format As You Type" tab. Deselect the "Automatic Numbered Lists" checkbox, then click OK to close the box.

To turn Auto Numbering back on, go back into Tools-AutoCorrect Options and recheck the "Automatic Numbered Lists" option.
