Widows and Orphans?

by - trainer Pete platinum contributer[803 posts] (2007 Nov 30 Fri, 14:04) replyReply

I am always having to retype documents that I receive, where some headings appear at the bottom of the page, bulleted items are split between pages, Titles are not always at the top of the page. How can I control where text falls on the page?

Answer to the question:
Well really we have 3 separate questions here:

1. To keep headings with following text;
a. Click on the heading you want to keep with the following paragraph.
b. Choose menu command Format, Paragraph
c. In the Paragraph dialog box, choose the Line and Page Breaks tab.
d. Enable (Check) - Keep With Next, and click OK. The heading will now be on the same page as at least the first line of the paragraph below it.

2. To keep several lines together;
a. Select the lines you want to be together on the same page.
b. Choose Format, Paragraph, Line and Page Breaks tab.
c. Enable (Check) - Keep Lines Together, and click OK.
Note: Keeping several lines together may push them all to the next page, leaving a blank space on the previous page.

3. To assure that Titles appear on a New Page
a. Clickon the Title paragraph
b. Choose Format - Paragraph, Line and Page Breaks tab
c. Enable (Check) Page Break Before, and click on OK. Word will now start a new page just before the line.

Word tip:

Remove 'Getting Started' Pane

When you start Microsoft Word 2003 a "Getting Started" pane appears to the right of the new document window.

It contains several options such as "Connect to Microsoft Office Online", "Get the latest news about using Word" and a list of your most recently accessed documents. Though useful to some, others may find it annoying.

The following steps allow you to remove the "Getting Started" pane.

1. Choose Tools then Options

2. In the Options dialog box select the View tab

3. Uncheck Startup Task Pane

4. Click OK to close the dialog box.
