Katie has attended:
Excel Intermediate course

Cell formating

sometimes when you change the type of value of the numbers in the cell - e.g. from currency to text/number and you make it 0 you get a green comment tag. Why is this?

RE: cell formating

Hi Katie

Thank you for your question.

This tends to happen when you change the format of a cell from something that Excel recognises as a number to something Excel recognises as text.

The reason it brings up the green triangle is to alert you to this, as once a value is formatted as text it cannot be used in a formula. So if you have formulas in the spreadsheet that refer to this cell, this value won't be included as part of the calculation if the value is changed.

I hope this helps.
Amanda

Excel tip:

Line breaks in a cell

You can control the line breaks for multiple-line headings or labels in your Microsoft Excel worksheet, just like you do in Microsoft Word. Here's how to do it.

Click the cell where you want the label or heading to appear.
Type the first line of information.
Press ALT+ENTER.
