Hi there,

I am trying to make it so that aside from the fixed frames at the top and the side I also have another fixed frame within the main page (but the 2nd fixed top frame is always specific to the diferent main pages that get loaded in the frame below it).

Is this possible?

I have tried using the horizontal split template for the main page - I can get this to work when I view the main page by itself on the internet explorer - that is the top frame stays fixed whilst links contained within it - when visited come up with the relevent bookmarks in the main frame that is positioned below it.

However after I have linked everything together and I go to visit that main page via a linked button on the actual homepage - the horizontal split feature of the main frame does not appear to work. That is when the links on the 2nd top fixed frame are clicked that top frame disappears and only shows the main frame that should only have appeared directly below it.

I hope I have managed to explain clearly enough!

Is there anyway of achieveing the functionality that I require - whether through dreamweaver or frontpage?

Hope to hear from you soon.
thanks
Jinat

Hi Jinat,

You've chosen quite a complicated set up. Remember, the more frames you have, the more complicated navigation is going to be to control and use.

It may be easier to use an include file or library item instead of your second top frame. Each main page that gets loaded has the appropriate include file at the top, which the visitor can use to browse within the main frame.

I did find it hard to follow what you're trying to do, even after reading a couple of times. Do you have a live site I could have a look at to understand more clearly?

There are ways to change the source (page) of all frames in your frameset. Dreamweaver has a built in behaviour called GoToURL, where you can specify which source (page) loads in to which frame. This will allow your visitors to click 'contact us' on the left sidebar, and the mainFrame load the contact us page, but also the 2nd top frame display the 'About us' topnav sections.

What you're experiencing is a too deeper frameset, and I can't help without really looking at the code. If you can provide the URL, I may be able to take a look, or this may be a consultancy requirement.

I'd also recommend considering templates or include files as an alternative to frames.

Frames are useful when the content you want in a frame is a very long list (eg. a huge table of contents), but if it's just 10 or 20 links on the side, templates are the way forward.

Regards, Rich

Actually after I posted the message I figured it out and it wasn't that hard at all.

I have opened them in internet explorer and they are working exactly the way I wanted it to.

Basically you have to get the 2nd top fixed frame to taRget to thE bottom when you are hyperlinking whilst the bottom frame target remains as itself.

Thats all!

Anyway thanks for your notes I'm sure they will contribute to my understanding on another rainy day.
