Dear Robert

I assume by Variables you mean the fields you can have going across!!

If that was your question then the answer is that adding Filed columns going accross make your file larger than adding the rows going down. WHY? Please don't ask me why!

After a certain no. of columns in your Pivot you start getting an error about "Not enough memory to display pivot table"!!

It also depends on the RAM and the hard disk space of your computer.

It is generally recommended that you limit the no. of column to three or four because of the above mentioned reason about teh memory.
