Excel Advanced course

Excel

How is the easiest way to Count the number of Items in a list which are words. For example if you had a list of Hotels in London and Edinburgh, how can you easily count the london entries, without putting in an extra column with 1 in it?

For upcoming training course dates see: Pricing & availability

RE: Excel

Hi Alison

Thank you for your question.

There is a function called COUNTA which can be used to count text or alpha-numeric entries in a spreadsheet.

So if your list of hotels was in A3:A22, you could enter =counta(A3:A22) and it will tell you how many entries there are in that range.

I hope this helps.

Excel tip:

Saving your Excel Spreadsheet as a CSV File

In situations where you need to save your Excel spreadsheet as a CSV file, follow these simple steps.

Click the File tab and click Save As.
Enter a name in the File name field.
Click the drop-down arrow next to the Save as type field to select the file type. Scroll down the list and select CSV (comma delimited) (*.CSV)
Click Save

The data will now be saved to a separate CSV file which can be used in different applications.
