Hi Graham, Thank you for your post, as in all operations in Word, we need to select (highlight) the area which we want Word to operate upon. In the case of formatting a particular area of a document, if you highlight that area and then perform your formatting commands, only that area will be affected. Word tip:

Turning on Track changes quickly

At the bottom of the screen is the status bar letting you know where you are on a page, but there is a TRK button which if double clicked turns on track changes.
