Where is the Desktop Folder

I frequently save incomplete documents to the desktop in order to access them quickly. But where are they really kept? The Desktop is actually the c:\windows\desktop folder.
To save to the Desktop; Press CTRL+S, click the Save In drop-down, then select Desktop from the top of the list.
