What is a Training Needs Analysis?

You've identified a need for training in your organisation.
Great, do you then just book some training or do you find out first where the knowledge gaps are?

A Training Needs Analysis (TNA) can help identify the skills gaps and provide more focussed training for staff development leading to a better Return on Investment (ROI).

Our approach: "Match the TNA to the requirement"

TNA's come in all shapes and sizes and can also become very bogged down in technical industry speak!
What's most important is giving you the right TNA.

For individuals or small groups a very light and effective TNA, one that we all do without a seconds thought, is to review the training course syllabus!

Yes this simple exercise can help people check they are selecting the right course to attend.

This is a good start but sometimes other TNA's are required, below are some examples that we have used with our customers (blue chips, household brands, SME’s and public sector).

Types of TNA When would you use this?

Email survey

Respondents complete a brief survey, all answers are captured in a database, analysed by a trainer and then a report is produced.

If you are looking to train a group of people and are unsure of what course level to select, this email survey can quickly identify common training needs and any specific requirements as well.

Quite scalable from a dozen people to several hundred, naturally the more respondents the more data to crunch!

Telephone survey

Where you have someone stuck on deciding which course level is right for them, a quick phone call with a trainer can help make the right choice.

Good for small numbers of people.

Seminar sessions/road shows

A team of trainers run an information seminar at staff offices and survey staff in brief one to ones or small groups.

Really useful for IT Rollouts, new systems/procedures where staff buy-in is crucial as well as close communication with key management.

Face to face

Half hour to an hour interview based sessions one to one with a trainer. Ideal for staff looking to improve performance in key areas. Can also involve the guidance of line managers.

Performance TNA

Your organisation has identified a specific set of performance standards for your team. You need a training program designed from the ground up that will also be followed up with appropriate benchmarking and reporting to ensure improvements are met.

Bespoke - Just for you

Tell us what you are trying to do and we will put together a bespoke TNA for you.

Case Studies

Global Pharmaceutical
Windows 7 & Microsoft Office 2007 roll out

Onsite meeting with project leader and key team members to learn how the training would complement the larger rollout (c250-300 people) project followed by extensive tailoring of the course contents to meet their specific requirements. The development process included two pilot sessions - the feedback from these events greatly informed the final solution delivered.

The training roll out was facilitated by 3 STL trainers and project managed in close partnership with the client's Projects & IT team. Training was delivered over 4 months and was completed with very positive feedback from both end users and client's project managers.

Based on this successful delivery STL have been promoted to preferred supplier and have completed further training roll outs within other divisions of the organisation.

Testimonial

I would like to thank you all for your contribution to the Windows 7 deployment. The training was pitched at exactly the right level and delivered in a very engaging way.

The survey results were excellent and I have had nothing but positive feedback from people about the training and floor walking.

So thank you again for helping to achieve such a successful rollout.

Microsoft Project training

After meeting with the senior project team a model was developed which was then used as the basis for developing customised training content and a bespoke supporting manual.

Development work took place on the customer's site which meant any questions the trainer had regarding the development of the material could be quickly answered by members of the customer's project team.

The bespoke Microsoft Project training was delivered at STL's Bloomsbury Square venue with 98% delegate satisfaction.

Testimonial

We decided to engage STL for our Microsoft Project training to our Project and Study Management teams.

The trainer Andrew worked with us to create a tailored course for delivery to our teams which has exceed our expectations. The enthusiasm for his subject matter was apparent for all to see and the feedback has been so positive that the call has been made for "more training"!

We will certainly look to work with STL again and would happily recommend their services.
